Now in week 32, I keep finding myself drawn to small book shops. There’s something about the presence and tactile quality of lots of books in one space. The frequency of color variation, the sound of books opening and closing and the collective history of knowledge all in one room. When I walked into Green Apple Books, the store had a lot of character which was is part of the charm. Every step can be heard on the aged hardwood floors and squeaky stairs near the back. The collection of books is wide-ranging and eclectic. I knew they’d be a good fit for the project.

Green Apple Books was founded by Richard Savoy in 1967. He was only 25 years old and like all the stories I’m learning week to week, he also had little business experience. There’s a nice lesson I’m learning and that is to do the thing you love to do and the world you want to create will develop around you.

Over the next 47 years, the shop expanded about 10 times its original 750 square feet and is perennially voted the best bookstore in the Bay Area by readers of the San Francisco Bay Guardian, the SF Weekly, and various other papers, magazines, websites, etc.

The time came when Mr. Savoy needed to find a successor worthy enough to carry on the business. The new owners, Kevin Hunsanger, Kevin Ryan, and Pete Mulvihill, absorbed all they could from Mr. Savoy to keep the store successful and part of the local community.

It’s good to know reading is alive and well in San Francisco and that those that still like to pick up a good book continue to have a place to go.

Go check them out and pick up this week’s free art while you’re at it!☺
