Socola Chocolatier is a delightful shop that was started by the talented sisters Wendy and Susan Lieu. For years they had a passion for making chocolates as a hobby, which eventually blossomed into their first retail location. Socola, which is Vietnamese for chocolate, opened in 2014 in the SOMA district of San Francisco with the help of funds from a successful Kickstarter campaign.

Wendy is the chief chocolatier who dreams up their unique truffle flavors inspired by “their travels, their childhood and their customers”. She has created unusual selections like durian, green tea matcha, Vietnamese espresso and bacon, PB&J, sriracha and guava, to name a few. And of course one of my favorites, the pop rocks chocolate bar. ☺ Susan, a Harvard graduate, is the business side of the operation and a marketing whiz.

The shop itself is a beautifully designed, inviting space and the service is wonderful and friendly. Aside from the artisanal truffles they’re known for, they also offer a range of amazing coffee drinks (don’t miss the “socolatte” or the “truffogato”), as well as hot chocolate and assorted pastries. And, they use fresh, local ingredients from other family owned businesses like Straus Creamery, E. Guittard, and Four Barrel Coffee. Their boxed truffles make for great gifts too.
