(In short)

Avoid wrapping gifts. Use old newspaper, or just give it as it is!
or maybe you can just change the concept of gifting.

1. hugs (zero-waste and zero-cost…just don’t be creepy)
2. fundraisers (facebook, or just give them some money…jk)
3. fruits (remind them that they’re fat and need to eat healthy, a huge watermelon would be ideal)
4. bulk foods in old pasta jars (chocolates, dry fruits, snacks)
5. experiences (dancing, singing, rock climbing, painting, cooking, baking, barista training, meditation, bartending)
6. groups (escape room, paintball, lasertag, road trip)
7. food (cook their favorite food or go to a their favorite restaurant; just be with them)
8. zero-waste starter kits (google for options, buy this if they really need it)
9. second hand thrift store products (if they’re okay with it)

PROBLEM

of course, fancy wrapping is part of the joy of gift-giving for some, but…..

Wrapping paper, is a pretty worthless use of trees.

Each year in the United States, 4 million tons go from logs to landfills to make wrapping paper and holiday shopping bags, according to Clean Air Council (src)

SOLUTION (src)

1. ALTERNATE WRAPS

1. no wrap!

2. newspaper

3. A pretty scarf or an old piece of clothing.

(which they can reuse again! or take it back and use it again :P)

or maybe you can just change the concept of gifting!

1. ALTERNATE GIFTS

1. hugs (it’s zero-cost)

2. fundraisers

3. fruits

4. bulk foods in old pasta jars

(go to a bulk store and fill it up with healthy nuts or chocolates!)

5. experiences

dancing, singing, rock climbing, painting, cooking, baking, barista training, meditation, bartending

6. for groups

escape room, paint ball, laser tag, road trip

7. food

cook their favorite food or go to a their favorite restaurant; just be with them

8. zero-waste starter kits (src)

Buy this if they’ve always wanted it else they might never use it!

9. second hand online/thrift store products (if they’re okay with it)

Gifted a used guitar pedal for a friend from guitar center.

Some more ideas here.

SUMMARY

I’ve gifted zero-waste products, a broadway show, a weekend trip (when i wasn’t zero waste), a lunch, second-hand instruments and loads of love. It’s much more fun. trust me.

Thanks,
Meghna ❤
