Week 30: The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemmingway
This week has been extremely hectic to the say the least. After mind numbing days of back to back placements and hectic planning for a 32 Hour startup event, I had barely anytime to read. I chose to read John Steinbach’s Grapes of Wrath this week. And when I was half way through it, I managed to lose it. In a panic that the week was coming to a close, I decided to read Ernest Hemmingway’s The Old Man and the Sea instead. The fact that it runs 99 pages and that the language is extremely simple thankfully ensured I was still on track to my 52 book target.
The book is about an old fisherman who is on a dry streak and one day manages to bait a huge fish in the sea. The book follows his struggle with the magnificent beast, his aquatic equal. Metaphorically talking about the great feud of man and nature and man’s great tests of endurance, Ernest Hemmingway beautifully tells a story of fortitude and human resilience.
This was an extremely interesting and impacting short story. Do grab a copy!
