William Tarpai, Board Members, SOCAL Sister Cities; Member, International Relations Council of Riverside
A truly great example of a sister city relationship that has promoted peace through mutual understanding, AND lasted 60 years is seen in the enduring relationship between Sendai, Japan and Riverside, California. The International Relations Council of Riverside (IRC) and the City of Riverside have a good relationship, as well as well-established links between universities in our two cities.
On May 8, 2016, 10,000+ runners participated in the 26th Sendai International Half Marathon through the streets of Sendai.
Each year, the city of Sendai, invites a female and male runner, and a team leader to participate in their half marathon (which is an Olympic qualifier event for the Japanese).
Each year, our Riverside team comes together, spending a week with the teams from Sendai’s sister cities, enjoying the sights and sounds of Sendai in the springtime (Sendai has sister city relationships with Rennes, France; Minsk, Belarus; Acapulco, Mexico; Changchun, China; Gwangju, South Korea; and Dallas, Texas).
For more information, please visit the Sendai Tourism, Convention and International Association (SenTIA) website.
The IRC Sendai Committee’s main fundraising event took place on May 19, 2016 in collaboration with Riverside Community Players. This event provided an opportunity to network within the community, and hear from race participants, who always return with incredible stories to tell about their new Japanese friends and places they visited during their trip to Sendai.
Each year, there are a number of other events bringing the IRC members together. Semi-annual park cleanings of our Japanese garden near city hall, receptions for student exchanges between our schools, periodic online chats between NGOs representing our sister cities.
