Don’t Try to Be Chosen

In a yearly event involving little glitz and less glamour, several word-loving institutions choose a Word of the Year.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary’s word for 2020 was pandemic.

Probably that doesn’t surprise you. What might be surprising, though, is the process used for deciding which word should represent the calendar year.

Here’s Emily Brewster, a lexicographer at Merriam-Webster:

“Well, I don’t actually think of our word of the year as being chosen so much as being identified.
