Diversity in the workplace
Diversity is a well-discussed topic in every industry. Even with all that discussion, the topic doesn’t seem to cease.
Diversity is such a board term as well covering race, gender, age and more.
In the recent Startup Muster report, it does show that there is diversity in our startup ecosystem.
Women founders are gradually increasing, more than one in four founders are female.
One Roof and SheStarts are just some example of female-centric companies supporting the gender diversity cause.
Foreigners are prominent in our ecosystem as well; the survey states 36 percent of the startup founders and 38 percent of future founders are not born in Australia.
On top of that, 16 percent of startups have at least one current employee on a working visa
However, this statistic might drop with the changes in skilled VISA.
But why is diversity important?
Diversity brings perspective and experiences allowing ideas to three-dimensional.
As the world is getting even more interconnected, services and products need to cater to all.
Having diversity in the workforce will increase representation of different groups.
I mean, we want to be inclusive don’t we?
Unless discrimination is the brand of the industry, we will have to conscious about making changes.
This doesn’t mean to go out and grab a diversity token to fill that gap.
What should be implemented is chucking out all hiring bias, stereotype or discrimination that exists in our minds and in the culture.
