Science and nature. Beauty and beast.

A bi-fi trilogy to blow you away by Jeff Vandermeer

A depressed secret operative gets assigned to a remote outpost by higher-ups. Rabbits keep disappearing. Something funny is happening with time. And plants. You won’t get to the owl until the third book. But it’ll make you cry.

I devoured this trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer and it’s why I’m calling this bi-fi. Not science-fiction but biology-fiction. The pages ooze living organisms, from field mice to plants to creatures you’ve perhaps only dreamed of.

In all my years reading sci-fi the only time I’ve come close to feeling this satisfied and enthralled by a complete rendition of something so NEW and so DIFFERENT was when I read Iain M Banks for the first time.

So go pick up these books. Devour them, before they devour you.

Oh — and if you like meta-reading here’s a note by Robin Sloan about the art of anticipation and the publishing of the Southern Reach trilogy (this is how I first heard about the books — coming full circle on Medium here!):
