17th December, 2017 — Chronicle 15
Its been more than 6 months since I moved on from a regular job. I am yet to commit to any particular endeavor — My time has been spent on of freelancing and exploring a couple of domains (SME sales, FMCG distribution). My workout has been going steady — This week I squatted 6 reps with 220 pounds :) without help and this was the fourth set, next stop 250 pounds. Also, this break has really helped me rewire my thinking on the important stuff — The financial loss has been well worth it :). Here are the 7 bullets of this week-
- [Video of the week]- Naval on SpartanUp — I have become such big fan of Naval Ravikant. All his advice is very actionable and terse. The following 20 min video is so high density in terms of great advise I recommend listening to it 3 times — each time a day after the previous hearing.
2. Manchester City — Yes I am ready to talk about them- Manchester City is one of the few words when combined with Football =~ bring out hatred. I have relentlessly criticized, questioned and ridiculed their football. This year they are the best team in Europe, winning convincingly against good opposition. With an 11 point lead in EPL they have already sealed the EPL title (my opinion), their brand of football is almost at level with the Barcelona team of 2008–2010 (The best team I have seen playing). Eager to see how they fare against the biggies of Europe.
3. Awesome India Stack — This is the most exciting time to be a developer in India (Not because of the frothy market leading to irrational salaries) the Internet infrastructure piece is falling into place and progressive steps from Indian regulators — 1) GST 2)UPI are bringing mainstream business use cases online. I am putting up a repository of stuff which can be referenced by developers when creating apps for India — The repo will contain basics like the regexes to validate PAN and Aadhaar cards to Libraries/API’s available to validate bank account, transfer money via UPI etc. The repo is work in progress, but will become useful by the end of this week, here is the link -
4. [DEV BULLET OF THE WEEK] — Storing API Keys and Passwords- Even after developing software for more than 10+ years I end up committing secrets-APIKeys, Passwords on version control, this can have disastrous effects once the developer team gets bigger. 5. [DESIGN BULLET OF THE WEEK] Open Source design principles — The following link open sources the design philosophies of well know web/mobile apps.
6. [YOUTUBE CHANNEL OF THE WEEK ] VisualPolitik- VisualPoltik channels consists of 10 minutes episodes- Each having theme of a specific country’s socio-economic status. My favorites are episodes focussing on Brazil-Why is it expensive, Qatar -Richest country on earth. These videos make a great passive watch for the curious. Find the playlist here-
