Photographing the trendy Tampere neighborhood of Pispala

The city of Tampere is located between two lakes, Näsijärvi in the north and Pyhäjärvi to the south. In the narrowest part between the lakes is Pispala, a neighborhood of charming colorful wood houses that in the 19th and 20th century were mainly occupied by factory and construction workers. It is located over the ridge that separates the two lakes.

Walking around Pispala requires you to climb and go down long stairs and small streets, which can be a little challenging specially in icy conditions. The views from the top of the ridge and from it’s southern shore are probably the best ones the district can offer.

Many of the houses still have Christmas lights style decoration, making it an interesting place either at day or night. With the streets basically empty around midnight, you get a sense of being in a small Fin village in the middle of nowhere, until you look up and see the bright coulds being illuminated by the strong lights of Tampere.
