Are you Superwoman?
You’re super excited to start your new venture. You call your mom and in your most enthusiastic voice, you tell her all about it. Silence, is the response you get. All of a sudden, an unwavering amount of doubt escapes her lips. “Why don’t you find a real job?”, she expresses confidently.
Does that voice sound familiar? Insert your own scenario here. Have you ever had someone tell you that you can’t do something or are not capable of achieving your dreams? It’s usually because they doubt themselves and have projected that doubt onto you. There are many people who have heard this same voice, but stopped at nothing to achieve great levels of success. The people who get there possess a certain amount of resilience, tenacity and incredible persistence. They embody a relentless spirit and believe that whatever they are doing is worth the short term sacrifice for long term success.
Let’s take YouTube vlogger and comedian, Lilly Singh also known as ‘Superwoman’, for example. She started her career in the YouTube world in 2010, when creating videos wasn’t nearly as trendy as it is now. Her father wasn’t 100% certain about her new found career, but he wasn’t completely against it either, although he had different dreams for Lilly. He wanted her to go back to school and finish her degree in Psychology. He made a deal with Singh that if her career in making videos on YouTube did not take off within a year, she would have to return back to school and pursue her predetermined legacy of being a doctor. Not too familiar with the platform herself, but knowing that it brought on a type of joy that she had never experienced before, she took the risk. Six years later, she exceeded even her own expectations by reaching over 1 billion views and boasts over 7.8 million YouTube subscribers. Those electrifying numbers placed her at #8 on the Forbes list of the World’s highest paid YouTube Stars as she earned $3 million in 2015.
Lilly’s will and determination is what landed her in the position that she is in today. What’s extraordinary about her is, her willingness to reject other people’s beliefs by taking the jump that changed her life. In order to achieve excellence, you have to sacrifice, believe and leap. Now, six years later from when it all began, Lilly recently released and starred in her own movie, “A Trip to Unicorn Island” on YouTube Red, the Hulu for YouTube.
It was such a success that not only did her fellow YouTubers show up to the red carpet premiere at the famous Mann Chinese theater, but so did traditional Hollywood stars like Keke Palmer. She ever received a heart filled text from Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson himself, whom she swoons over daily calling him her Hollywood crush. Lilly can now be seen on billboards, on Sunset Boulevard and Time Square, with her image plastered on real estate that is usually reserved for top Hollywood Elite or multi-million dollar ad agencies. Just imagine, all of this started from making videos alone in her bedroom with the simple thought of making people happy.
We are all capable of doing what Lilly Singh has accomplished, the question is, how bad do you want it and how hard are you willing to work to achieve it?
