Keeping it Real & True with Alexx A-Game

Alexx A-Game is definitely one to look out for in 2019. He has been steadily rising in the music industry since 2016. He gave me two personal faves for last year, ‘I Know’ and ‘Go Harda’. Some well-needed motivation which I will be carrying with me in 2019. He always keeps it real and true, both in his music and interviews. This one was no different.

You’re originally from the garden parish, St. Ann. Woods Town, Discovery Bay to be exact. What was life like back in your home town?

Alexx A-Game: The community that I grew up in is a complex environment. Mi like put it like that. A complex environment where there isn’t any one type of person. Eg. The man you see on the corner smoking weed, is the same man you will see waking up early and going to work. It’s also a small tight knit community where everyone knows each other. I can definitely say that they support me and my craft and are behind me 100%.

So, you moved to Kingston to chase your dream of being a recording artiste. You started that journey at The Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. Speak to us about your time at Edna.

Edna to me was more like a family more than a school system. Just by being in the environment of creatives and like-minded people, that was one of the main factors that made me want to further myself in music. I didn’t graduate but I definitely garnered the knowledge that I needed to take on the road.

During your time at Edna Manley, you and a couple of fellow students started Di Bluprint Band. Talk to us about your time with the band and what you learnt from that experience.

My time with the band basically taught me things about live performance and just generally taking on the road as a musical entity. That time also gave me some early insight into the ins and outs of the music industry, professionalism and just show business.

After the success with the band, you decided to take on a solo career as an artiste in 2014. Releasing projects such as A-Game Everyday (2014) and Real & True Vol.1 (2016) Talk to us more about the rationale behind Vol.1

I named the mixtape, ‘Real and True’ because that was the project where I decided that I was going to be very transparent and blunt in my music. However I feel in any given moment or on any given day, that’s how I’m going to tell it. No sugar-coating. The people can definitely look out for Vol. 2, hopefully some time in 2019.

Alright, before we move to 2019. You had a pretty good 2017–2018, with the release of singles such as ‘I Know’ and ‘Double’ feat. Tory Lanez. Give us a little background on these tracks.

‘I Know’ was the single that got everybody to pay attention and get the name Alexx A-Game out there in a big way. With consistent rotation both in the streets and on the radio. People just seemed to connect with the song right away. To be honest, I was surprised by the response. I knew people would like it but I didn’t expect it to get the push that it did

Official video for ‘I Know’:

I was always a big fan of Tory Lanez, so getting the chance to do a song with him was a pretty big deal for me. I made the song a couple years ago and even from then I could hear Tory on it. It just so happened that I had a friend who knew someone who is very close to Tory and we made the link. I went up to Miami to record and shoot the video and everything came out well.

Let us move away from the music for a little. Some people might not know but you’re pretty big on charity work and just generally giving back. Tell us more about that.

I’m known to just get up and give back randomly on any given day. Like, recently I saw someone doing a Toy Drive online and I decided to just contribute. Out of the blue, nothing really planned. I’ve also done like Back to School treats in my hometown for the kids to close out their summer with a bang. I’m definitely looking forward to doing more in 2019.

For the new year you’ll be expecting a baby! What is the feeling like?

It has really changed a lot for me, especially mentally. Family is the core and foundation for all things. Even though the constant travelling will be a challenge, I definitely want to be that person who will be there for my child.

All the best with fatherhood! In closing, what you say people should look out for in the new year?

They can just expect consistency and growth. New music, of course. I have a lot of unreleased tracks, it’s really just up to the right timing as to when to release them. Also, more visuals and live performances.

Alexx A-Game enters the new year in an unapologetic mood with his new single featuring another standout artiste from 2018, Ding Dong. Alexx delivers his message in a cunning way but while listening you will definitely get the point.
