As Snapchat continues to develop into a powerful way to connect with friends and followers, it’s important to maintain a professional image. We get it, Snapchat is supposed to be fun and spur of the moment! And it can definitely still be just that while keeping some things in mind. Savannah shared some tips in our 3 Minute Thursdays series over on Facebook, but we wanted to dig a little deeper.

Only Share Great Content

The greatest rule of marketing also applies to Snapchat: only share great content. Keeping your snap stories short and sweet while featuring a variety of content will keep your followers engaged. There’s no need for 100 seconds of selfies or your last three meals. I’m sure they were delicious, but it’s okay. We promise.

Distinguish Between DMs and Stories

You’ll also want to know the difference between photos for DMs and for your Story. As Savannah says, keep your DMs to DMs, and stories as stories. Some of your DMs may not be applicable to a wide range of people and shouldn’t be added to your story. And some snaps shared to your story don’t need to be sent as DMs, especially if they’re a general “here’s what I’m doing” snap.

Use Common Sense

Ever hear the comment about “jokes are only funny the first time around?” The same goes for those filters. Girls, the dog filter is cute and all, but it’s so two months ago. And guys, don’t think you’re getting off the hook. For one, I’ve seen some of you using that filter too. And second, there’s no need for inappropriate DMs, let’s keep it PG. Please.

The Screenshot Golden Rule

One Snapchat surprise is the notification that someone took a screenshot. A good rule of thumb is to always ask before taking a screenshot; you wouldn’t want someone to take one without asking you, right? Right. Even if it’s not a “bad” snap, per say, let’s treat others the way we would like to be treated.

As Snapchat continues to become a key piece of a marketing strategy, both for companies and personal brands, it’s important to keep these points in mind. Keep your content high quality, DMs and stories separate, and common sense flowing while keeping the golden rule in mind. Snapchat can definitely be both professional and fun, and it’s a great way to connect with followers in a less formal way. Now, what to snap?
