In this conversation with the 8 Circuit Studios team, we feature Patrick Guimarais who tells us about his current role, what brought him to 8 Circuit Studios and his love of innovative technology.

8 Circuit Studios: Hi Patrick, to start, can you introduce yourself?

Patrick Guimarais: Sure thing. I’m a 25 year old from Los Angeles. I went to school in New York City and hold degrees in Computer Science and Mathematical Economics. In my free time I love working out, traveling, investing, and hanging out with friends. I am obsessed with how we interact with technology, and how it touches our lives. I also believe business can be the ultimate technology — scaling efficiencies along with incentives.

8 Circuit Studios: What do you do at 8 Circuit Studios?

Patrick Guimarais: I function primarily as a full stack engineer. Working across the frontend and backend, I’m often deep in the code or working through designs. And when needed, I put on my economics hat and even chat with folks in the financial sector about what we’re doing.

8 Circuit Studios: What brought you to 8 Circuit Studios and this project?

Patrick Guimarais: I was working at a startup in the Bay Area, and a previous engineering director knew James and the team from past ventures. He made the introduction and the rest is history.

8 Circuit Studios: How do you explain what you’re working on to your family and friends?

Patrick Guimarais: I explain that my team and I are seeking to achieve mass blockchain adoption through the lens of games. And by solving technology needs for games, we can generalize and apply solutions to other industries.

8 Circuit Studios: Prior to blockchain, what technology do you recall really blowing you away when you first experienced it?

Patrick Guimarais: I would have to say machine learning. The rate of advancements in the field is mind bending, and its application will really change most things we know. Before that — the iPhone.

8 Circuit Studios: Who or which companies do you admire for what they deliver?

Patrick Guimarais: I really admire Amazon and Bridgewater Associates for their innovative approaches to business and unique ways of thinking, but also their relentless and successful execution against their principles. Amazon found an entry point with an online book store and has undoubtedly scaled an incredible business that spans many industries. As for Bridgewater Associates — they are the largest hedgefund in the world — working primarily with governments, pension funds, and other sources of capital that serve the public. Their entire approach to thinking is algorithmic, and they encode their principles for investing as well as their principles for interacting with others — so that they can continuously analyze situations with clarity and improve their understanding of the world. In an era of information overload, their principles serve as a beacon for how to sift through the bs.

8 Circuit Studios: What do you hope to achieve with 8 Circuit Studios?

Patrick Guimarais: It may sound corny — but I want to make blockchain easy, accessible, and fun! As a technologist, I think blockchain is going to be a piece of the puzzle for many solutions in the future — and I want to master its understanding and application. As an economist, I think that the blockchain movement is super fascinating for many reasons. So I’m here having a blast learning and building as much as I can with a great team.
