Once You Watch Yes Day, You Won’t Be Able to Say No Again!
By Ayana Alamgir
Have you ever wished your parents said ‘yes’ to everything? In this movie, you get your dream childhood life! Always feeling like they have to say “no” to their kids, Allison and Carlos decide to give their three kids a “Yes Day,” during which the kids have 24 hours to make the rules.
The children had to earn the Yes Day with good grades, good behavior, and disciplined rules. Eventually, they earned their Yes Day and made so many fun activities from eating ice cream for breakfast, to exploding the house with vinegar and baking soda. Yes Day turned out to be a flop at the end, but shares an important message to the audience. I liked how the movie turned out and it was very interesting. However, I did not like how the eldest daughter, the teenager’s, behavior.
What Allison and Carlos aren’t ready for, is the wild day that their kids — teen Katie (Jenna Ortega), tween Nando (Julian Lerner), and little sister Ellie (Everly Carganilla) — have in store for them. Their Yes Day sends the Torres family into some unanticipated situations. The storyline itself is so interesting that you are bound to like it. The way the makers have packaged this entire movie makes it even more interesting. Jennifer Garner, as mom, is just in capital letters WOW with the way she nails her role. Edgar Ramirez plays the dad who also fits into the skin of the character. It contained the right humor along with the best actors for the characters.
The genre for this movie was definitely a Comedy / Family Film / Drama. The theme of this story was loving one another because the family has a strong bond between them, the kids, and the adults. No matter what, they always seem to have each other’s backs and work as a team. They made hard sacrifices for each other, especially the mom. Last but not least, the movie made me learn and conveyed that no matter how strict a parent may seem they are doing what’s best for you, the bond is beautiful and the love is strong. It seemed like a good fit for a critique because it has a plot twist, and has important lessons! Even though it didn’t work out in the end, the kids learned an important moral. Afterwards, I really wanted to have a Yes Day, and I’m sure you will too.
While the concept is fun, the children (especially the older daughter, Katie) treat their parents awfully. There’s no kindness within the family here….and then, instead of any consequences, the parents agree to the teen’s demands. Really poor role modeling here — for parents and the kids. Therefore, I would rate it a 4.5 out of 5 stars. It would definitely be a movie for a desperate family in need of a movie to watch on a Sunday night. It shows that no matter how much fun you have there is always an extent and sometimes rules are actually good, keeping everything intact. It gives people the vision to live… have fun and dream big, because you never know until you try.
