Jamila Woods is more than just writing songs to be writing songs. She got some things to say. “LEGACY! LEGACY!” explores trauma, joy, and connections, celebrating the legacy of influential figures in Black history. “LEGACY! LEGACY!” pays homage to the legacies of black artists, writers, and activists. Each track is named after an influential figure, creating a tapestry of songs celebrating cultural heritage and personal identity. The backdrop is the album’s blend of neo-soul, R&B, and jazz.

Woods’ tracks, such as “BALDWIN” and “OCTAVIA,” stand out for their ability to weave complex narratives. They tackle pressing societal issues like gentrification and the importance of representation, adding depth to the album.

My favorite track is Zora. It has a driving beat and lyrics that make me introspective as I bob my head. Her voice is raspy, plaintive, and assertive.
