Protocol Weekly is a newsletter to exclusively showcase the progress of Ethereum layer-2 protocols.
Shout out to Connext Network for joining Protocol Weekly this edition! We’re also proud to mark the 1 month anniversary of this newsletter. The feedback from the community has been great so far and we look forward to seeing what everyone builds. What’s really cool is how all of these projects can come together to provide amazing decentralized solutions. For example, you could convert your ETH (Kyber) to purchase index funds (Set) every month (8x) as a verified user (Civic) and use your CryptoKitties as a collateral in case you default on your payment (Dharma). That’s a wrap for this week — feel free to reach out to me on Twitter @kermankohli

From Inje Yeo (CPO):
- Private Alpha Launch — We launched on Ropsten and Kovan TestNets with an initial version of our V2 contracts. If you’re interested in being a private alpha developer, join our Telegram channel. Our current developer tools allow you to create, bundle, and unbundle Sets, as well as create an early version of a Set issuance relayer.
- Rebalancing — We’re making good progress on our rebalancing Set development. The rebalancing Set will allow you to move from one Set allocation to another without requiring Set holders to do anything at all. Developer tools for rebalancing will be released in the coming months. If you want to be an early developer using the rebalancing functionality, join our community here
- ETHBerlin — We’re going to ETHBerlin! We’ll be there as mentors helping people solve issues that pop up while you’re developing. If you’re around during the event, come say hi! We’d love to get to know you!

From Brendan Dharma (Head of Growth Operations):
- We spent the last two weeks in Asia across Beijing, Bangalore, Hong Kong, and Seoul. We met some really interesting teams, including DDEX and BitPie in Beijing, Matic and Connext in Bangalore, several exchanges in Hong Kong, and ICON in Seoul
- We attended ETHIndia, where we were blown away by the 9 (!!) awesome teams that built projects on Dharma. We awarded first prize to a team that built the first functioning bond issuance platform (link: https://www.reddit.com/r/DharmaProtocol/comments/975elj/ethindia_project_submissions_on_dharma/)
- We released a new and improved Developer Portal (developer.dharma.io). Developer Portal includes a conceptual overview of Dharma Protocol, deep API documentation, tutorials and starter kits, and an extensive FAQ
- Close to finishing up a collateralizer contract for ERC721s. This enables loans of any unique NFT — crypto kitties, plots of decentraland, invoices represented by NFTs, etc.
- We’re always hiring (https://angel.co/dharma-labs/jobs). Current hiring priority is for blockchain and full-stack development. If you don’t see a great role fit but are interested in working with us, shoot Brendan a note at brendan-at-dharma-dot-io

From Anton Buenavista (Senior Engineer):
- Improved UX for KyberSwap. We listened to feedback from our community and have made several changes to KyberSwap: live charts streaming, tokens, more options to sign in, contact, support for mobile, API, notifications. To give users a detailed overview of the KyberSwap product flow, we have also prepared a guide here.
- There were several improvements in the KyberGO front. Users can now contribute to token sales directly from their mobile phone wallet app (like Trust Wallet) together with MetaMask, Trezor, and Ledger Wallet. In addition, KyberGO now supports token sales with multi-phase bonuses and sales with/without individual caps.
- We have made several technical improvements to our smart contracts as well: permissionless reserves, automated market maker contract, permissionless fee sharing, OASIS DEX.
- The user security aspect on the entire Kyber platform is improved, following the addition of 2-factor authentication for account system users.
- Kyber’s smart contract has also been audited and verified by ChainSecurity, an audit platform for smart contracts. This was their conclusion: “Kyber has a detailed trust model that combines upgradability and trustworthiness, an achievement that is rarely seen.” — ChainSecurity

We’re continuing to improve our engagement with our developer community. If you have more in-depth questions about Kyber’s technical updates or how to integrate with Kyber and tap into our liquidity network, please speak to our friendly developers in our KyberDeveloper Telegram.
From Daniel Wang (Founder of Loopring Foundation):
- Fee model of protocol 2.0 — a major change in the 2.0 update is the ability for users to pay the matching fee in any ERC20 token. Protocol 2.0 itself has two matching classes, peer to peer and third party.
- External contract calling — the Loopring Protocol smart contracts can choose to continue settling rings in the same transaction even when some external contracts throw exceptions. This new approach maximizes the ring settlement success probability and reduces ring miners’ gas consumption.
- Another implemented feature is the handling of the transfers of tokens that don’t fully comply with the ERC20 standard.
- Relay 1.0 — Our developers have also added APIs to enable promoting our Wallex Apps for profit-sharing. This interface will initially be used by the new Loopr-iOS app (and apps based on the same code base) soon upon launch.
- Lightcone Relay — We’ve finished the overall system design for Lightcone, and have implemented some core logic regarding actor ad-hoc deployment and configuration which enables relay ops to add/remove/config market pairs without restarting any server. Over the months to come, we’ll focus on coding and testing the new relay.
- Frontend & Product — RingTracker will be something like 0xtracker.com to display stats regarding orders, settlements, and relayers. We’ve made outstanding progress in the design and implementation of this RingTracker tool. It will be available soon at https://ringtracker.io.
- USDT pairings added — We fixed minor bugs in Circulr and did some UX optimization according to community feedback. Now Circulr and Loopr also support more USDT-based trading pairs. We’ve also upgraded Loopring.js accordingly.
