Some beliefs may benefit the individual, but others probably benefit the system at a cost to the individual. Such beliefs would still survive as long as enough individuals reproduce sufficiently — they are “carriers”, like carrying a virus that doesn’t harm you enough to kill you, but you may very well be better off without. I see it more as following the handicap principle, like showing that you can afford to follow certain restrictions and still survive.

It can form certain communities, though. So it is possible that it is those communities that help the survival of the individuals. But ideally people should be able to have communities without having to subscribe to a specific belief system…
