Cushion foundations are making their way into Western markets and I cannot be any more excited as people try them for the first time! With a wide array of finishes, ranging from ultra matte to dewy, there’s something for everyone. Cushions are convenient for those midday touch ups as it’s a product and applicator combined.

What is a cushion foundation? Cushions are a makeup product that holds liquid base makeup in a compact case. The liquid foundation is soaked in a sponge and dispenses product when pressed. No matter what cushion you purchase, each cushion is made up of 4 main parts: a mirror, foundation, cushion palette, and a puff. Each plays an integral role in achieving a soft finish.

There are several tips and tricks to learn in order to achieve that glass look all the makeup beauties are doing.

Priming the Puff

The first step when opening a new cushion is priming the cushion puff! Most cushion users jump right in and begin tapping the product onto the face. However, spreading a thin layer of product across the puff will ensure seamless application. Much like priming your face before applying makeup, this step is crucial to avoid patchy spots. To get this effect, gently press the puff one to two times into the product and rub it into the applicator. You can begin using the cushion once the product’s absorbed in.

Use the Palette

The best feature about cushions is that a little goes a long way. My recommended rule is pressing one time and dispersing the product further onto the palette. The palette serves as a surface to leave or pick up as much product to apply onto the face. It’s much easier going in with little product on the puff rather than spending minutes blending a big patch of foundation. The foundation isn’t going to waste either as you can use the remaining product on the palette for next time.

Cleaning the Puff Regularly

I know, I know. We avoid cleaning our makeup brushes as long as possible but regularly cleaning your cushion puff will make the biggest difference. Having a fresh applicator allows the foundation to set better against your skin. If you notice layers of foundation piling up or it’s been a while since you’ve cleaned the puff, simply wash it with warm water and a gentle face wash. No need for a fancy brush cleaner solution or a scrubber, rubbing the soap with your fingers will suffice. Be sure to air dry before putting it back in the cushion compact.

So, what’s the best cushion for you? It solely depends on what you’re looking for. There is a wide variety of formulations for cushions, ranging from light to heavy coverage. Most cushions are able to accommodate specific skin needs, such as hydration or more SPF. Check out my list of cushion foundations to see which one is best for you!
