On Set as 1stAD with my Director gettin shit dun.

The Trimester has finally come to an end and the premier of Grimdustries is only a couple of hours away. Alot has been learnt and i think I’ve grown as not only a film-maker but also an adult. Reflecting on this trimester from the start, I remember myself being super unhappy with my idea for a webseries not getting picked after I’d put so much dedicated effort into it. But that’s how the industry works and ie definitely learnt to take each failure in stride and learn to grow rather than shrink from them.

My writing also strengthened this trimester. Learning to work with a co-writer and a writing team was a big step for me, I’m used to having a project and just running at it, all guns blazing and getting feedback later down the track, but this time it was nice to bounce ideas of the writers around me and construct an idea with a group. It was also super helpful when I got stuck as I had another 5 writers who were all working on the similar scripts with similar themes and beats to get me out of a jam.

Stepping up for my first attempt at assistant directing was also a big challenge to overcome for me, I’ve never been a big fan for the organization side of a film production but I felt being one of those pathway roles, it would be good to get some experience now before im thrown out into the big boy pool. Assistant director was quite an experience and definitely not a relaxed job, always having to keep a level head and always looking for solutions to problems even before they’ve happened, anytime the words “i need this done” were spoken, that’s when I sprung into action. This was also a great time for me to learn how to evenly distribute my serious side and my fun side on set and I think i managed this quite well.

All in all i think this trimester has taught me a lot about the industry and a lot about myself. Its built my confidence in ways i didn’t expect and given me the skills I need to really succeed in the industry i hope to work my way into. I’m still not entirely sure which direction I want to head in terms of a career, there’s still a bit of time for me to work it out. I’m definitely leaning towards writing as i prefer the creative control bt i also loved being on set in a role like 2nd AD, so we’ll just have to see how we go.

I’d like to thank my Lecturers for an awesome trimester, you’ve helped me heaps and have always been so supportive. Cheers Guy & Ricky, whether you’re reading this or not.
