As a kid I used to make up battles. “Ah, the Nazis have invaded but good thing the friendly american loving dinosaurs are here to protect us.”

I think there is something fun and magical about real history colliding with fantasy. Game of Thrones is a hot topic right now. Let’s compare to that. The first season of Game of Thrones has almost nothing magical about it. It feels more like a period piece than a fantasy. Which is used in it’s favor to hook you into it’s world. Before you know it, you’ll be watching zombie dragons burn down mile high walls of ice.

I’m going to call this sub-genre of fantasy, real-fantasy.

The Secret War, feels very real fantasy.

During the heat of the second world war, the red army finds itself deep within Siberia, fighting off a threat. Entire village seem to be wiping off the map.

As they journey further into the forest it is revealed that they are on a search and destroy mission. What they are searching for soon ambushes them. It’s a pack of horrible monsters, a good chunk of the forces are picked off by the hell spawn but ultimately they hold them off.

It turns out their leaders decided to summon these demons to fight the Nazis. Not the best use of resources. The hell spawn turned around and immediately started picking off the Russian forces. So they find their nest and basically everyone is dead at this point, when they decide to blow it up. They blow it up but they underestimated how big the nest was and an endless swarm begins pooring out the ground and they are overtaken. Before they all die the commander tells his son to ride off and order a bomb strike. It’s the only way to kill them all. The bomb strike is ordered and the credits roll.

This episode had great animation, enjoyable storytelling, and fun setpieces.

9/10.
