Students at Benjamin Franklin High School have the opportunity to get their morning dose of caffeine before starting the day. The local coffee truck, The Exchange, travels to their school once a month to help the cheerleaders for their nationals fundraiser. The money the coffee truck earns goes to the cheerleader’s individual accounts, allowing them to use the money while they’re at nationals. The two owners, Ashley and Breena, have a very unique background story.

“I love the cheer team. It’s fun! I like being with my friends and just hanging out. I love being with everyone and just getting a good team bonding, cuz that’s always fun!” — Lily Aguero

The two owners exchange love for their shared son. They decided: Why not exchange coffee too? Their love for the beverage and their creative recipes sparked a new journey.

“I started this business with my step-son’s mom, and we exchange him back and forth. And we also exchange love, so we wanted to exchange coffee too and share the love with our community!” — Ashley Gerardo

“We did it! We found our perfect horse trailer! She’s a 1990 stock trailer and we’ve named her Essie. Excited to begin renovations!”

The Exchange is a coffee truck made out of a horse carrier, Essie. To begin, $25,000 was used for the truck. The idea sparked during Covid-19 around June 2020. With everyone cooped in a house, it was the perfect opportunity to embark on a new project. A lot of preservation, espresso, and hard work created a new empire for the two ladies.

Their menu has amazing classics like macchiatos, lattes, and americanos, but also have their own specialties! Many students are return customers, hinting at their great recipes and techniques.

“Today I ordered the matcha latte with white chocolate syrup. I also ordered a small iced macchiato. I actually came to this truck a few times last school year too. ”— Jon Aceves
