I woke up this morning knowing that Shawn was in the hospital getting his wisdom teeth removed. I decided to pop on some jeans, Red Converse shoes Shawn got me from Japan when writing his third album and this big oversized hoodie (Shawn’s of course!) which had the words ‘I LOVE YOU’ imprinted on it in a baby blue colour.
I grabbed my keys, phone, purse and left. I knew that Shawn would probably want something with him so I brought along Leo the Lion, a box of double chocolate chip muffins, an iPod and some earphones for him.
Soon before I reached the hospital, I got a text from Karen saying that he was ready for me to pick up and to be ready for absolutely anything. I chuckled, knowing that if Shawn was already acting like a 13-year-old when he wasn’t in the hospital post-operation status then who knows what he would do now!
‘Which room is Mr Shawn Peter Raul Mendes in?’ I asked at the front desk.
‘Relation to him?’
‘His fiancée.’
‘Ah, yes Y/N, Room 198.’
Even before I walked into the room I heard Shawn belting out the lyrics to ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ while his mum tried to calm him down. I walked into the room.
‘Hi Karen! How’s he doing no-’ I started to ask ‘STRANGER DANGER, STRANGER DANGER, STRANGER DANGER!’ Shawn started jump up and down and started to scream at me! It was quite the scene to be looking at.
‘Err, Shawn, I got you muffins and Leo!’ I shrieked over the top of my voice, trying to get him to listen. ‘Ooooh. give me. I get to have Leo and them all! Haha!’ He then decided that sticking his tongue out at me and blowing raspberries would be a really nice at 11 in the morning to a person who had no sugar or caffeine yet.
‘Shawn, sit down for me, you need to get your Paracetamol and medicines first! Please?’ I gave him my puppy eyes and he soon obliged.
He muttered under his breath, ‘I’m sorry, I just really like muffins and I didn’t get to see Leo for a whole day…’ I sighed and said ‘No biggie, just have your medicines then you can finish all of them if you want.’
His face lit up so I took the opportunity and gave him the medicine which was by the table in the straw which they instructed us to use because he couldn’t have pills just yet – he had only just gotten out of the operation room.
‘Wow! It tastes like strawberries and the fluffy pink clouds in the sky!’ He exclaimed while grinning from ear to ear.
Suddenly, he burst into tears so I crouched in front of him, slowly rubbing his arm and asked with a concerned look, ‘What happened Shawn?’ He just looked at me with the saddest face I had ever seen him put on and he whispered in my ear, ‘The f-fluffy pink c-clouds are gone now…’ I gently kissed the top of his head, soothing him and telling him that there were still lots left in the sky.
I gave him his iPod and earphones so he could listen to music while Karen told me about what happened. ‘He got up in the morning and was totally freaked out about the procedure and almost had a panic attack but when I told him that you were going to meet him afterwards. He hugged me belting out the lyrics to ‘Happy’ and ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow!’ He ran straight to the car to get dropped off!’
I laughed at this, knowing that even in his half asleep and scared state his love for me never went.m
Soon, the nurse came in with a wheelchair in the hopes that Shawn wouldn’t burn the hospital down in his overly optimistic mindset (from past experiences) where even burning a hospital down just means that Leo the Lion has more space to run around in and was no big deal. He also gave me a bag of pills to give Shawn every 4 hours with lots of rest and fluids.
We had to literally shove him in the car, he didn’t want to get in at first, but after being sweet and understanding but, with him being stubborn while singing ‘Let It Go’ for the umpteenth time I had to resort to something. After all, I knew that he would start to feel the pain and would need all the sympathy that he could get once he snapped out of his daydreams and realised how much it hurts without anaesthesia and morphine in you.
Karen went to pick up Aaliyah from her game so she left. I sighed, knowing that I would have to deal with a 7-year-old Shawn with me for the next 2 hours.
‘It… it h-h-hurts a lot’ He whispered with a tear falling down his cheek. The light was green so I pulled the car over, just to be on the safe side. ‘Aww, Shawn don’t worry, we’re nearly home. Then I can give you your medicines, ok?’ I explained while rubbing his thigh slowly.
I was going to sit with him in the back seat but decided against it, knowing that he would spend another half an hour here whimpering and it would be best anyway if he had his meds first.
When I turned round, he was already fast asleep while holding Leo the Lion in his arms. I smiled, and carried on driving back home.
Once we got home and I parked the car, I tried to wake Shawn up. I slowly rubbed his back, knowing that it was the only thing which could wake him up, even from the deepest of dreams.
He slowly aroused from his sleep and somehow dragged himself inside the house and onto the sofa in the living room. ‘Shawn, you need to eat and have your medicine before you sleep, then it will only hurt a bit when you wake up again.’ I muttered.
He looked at me a slight smile but with tears in his eyes from the pain slowly creeping in, he nodded. ‘I’ll get you a muffin ok? Do you want to talk to mum?’ His smile widened so I handed him the phone while I went to go and get the muffins from the car.
Once I got in, I heard him talking about the time him and Bob Ross went to the moon to feed Purple Space Monkeys slices of carrot cake. Aaliyah was on the phone now, she chuckled and told him to tell him more about the trip. About 20 stories and around an 1 hour and 45 minutes later, Shawn had told everybody back home about his trip with Bob Ross and how the Kraken nearly tried to take his muffins away.
He had cried for a good 10 minutes in my arms while I soothed him because of the ‘mean’ Kraken and wiped the tears that were slowly falling from his eyes before he finally realised that there was a box full of tissues in front of him. He wiped his nose and eyes and looked at me expectantly.
I gave him his muffin and once he ate it, he swallowed his pills, drank his water and cuddled with me for a good 15 minutes.
He then said to me, ‘Thank you so much Y/N! I feel better already!’ I smiled knowing that even 7-year-old Shawn would approve of what I had done for him so far.
He then abruptly giggled saying ‘Your hoodie says I Love You! Do you love me?’ I replied saying ‘Yes, a lot!’ I then whispered under my breath ‘I definitely do. I’m not engaged to you for no reason!’
He yawned so I said to him, ‘Time for bed muffin man!’ He lay his head on top of my stomach and wrapped his arm around my waist. I slowly and carefully covered him with a blanket, gently drawing circles on the palm of his hand knowing it would ease him to sleep.
I texted the family group chat saying: ‘Mission Accomplished!’
