TIPS FOR INCREASING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

In a growing health-conscious world, many people have come to realize the importance of staying physically fit and healthy while also recognizing the fact that to achieve the same, it’s extremely important for a person to stay engaged in daily physical activity.

HOME

  • Begin your day with an active morning routine by staying engaged in daily morning walk or jogging session followed by some high-intensity interval or scientific training workout featuring exercises that last six to twenty minutes.

Pursuing a couple of them will help you to maintain and increase your level of physical activity.
  • Meditation and Yoga which are generally performed indoors, not only helps to relieve stress, and improve focus and concentration, but also helps a person to stay physically active and fit.
  • There are many household chores that you can choose from like helping out in the kitchen to cleaning and mopping the floors, doors and windows, washing clothes or cleaning your vehicle like scooter / car, etc. Take up a couple or more of them for they help you to stay active and alert as well.
  • If you have a garden or a balcony with potted plants, maintain a regular gardening schedule with activities like giving a fresh makeover to the location and background of the potted plants to watering the plants as well as lush green grass from time to time. This way, they retain their luxuriant glow.
  • Play with your kids and engage with them in indoor games or study-work or simply general banter.

WORKPLACE

  • If your office is nearby, walk down to your office or cycle to your office.
  • If you’re going to your office which is at a far distance by Bus or Metro or even Auto, get down a few stops earlier and then walk down to your office.
  • While sitting at your desk working, indulge in frequent hand and leg exercise movements.
  • During Coffee Breaks, instead of asking for the Coffee at your table, walk down to the Coffee Room and have it there.
  • Indulge in periodic 10-minute wall-breaks now and then, like going upstairs to meet your colleagues, or going downstairs for a breath of fresh-air.
  • Take part in office exercise program (Most Companies today offer the same) with commitment and fun. You will also learn a lot of new things like new fitness exercises.
  • Join your office sports teams taking part in Corporate Tournaments. Most corporate companies these days take part in yearly tournaments held for sports like Cricket, Hockey, Badminton, Tennis, etc.

GENERAL

  • Go for morning walks daily for ½ hour and if possible, go for evening or late night walks as well for the same duration.
  • Allocate ½ or 1 hour to fitness exercises daily. The session could include body-stretching and lifting weights for three times a week, each on alternate days.
  • Take a nature walk now and then. Soak in its magical charm and you will watch how it will lift your spirits while also helping you stay healthy and happy.
  • Wherever possible, whether at your Apartment or Office or a Commercial Centre, use the Stairs instead of the elevator. They will not make your legs strong but also give your body a healthy boost.
  • If you’re taking your vehicle out for shopping or something else, park your Car in a spot or parking area that is little away. Then walk down to your destination and again walk back to the spot or parking area to get back into your car.
  • Walk your Pet like Dog or Cat, down the road in the morning & evening or play with your Kids by taking them to the playground or play-area.
  • While watching TV or working on laptop / Smartphone OR speaking on Smartphone indulge in a walk or use a treadmill at a steady pace or simply engage in some light exercises.
  • Indulge in Gardening, one of the best forms of exercise, planting or watering the plants or simply cleaning up the Garden mess and giving it a brand new makeover.
  • Engage in dancing to music beats at Music Shows shown on the TV / held at a Club OR played out on a tape-recorder.
  • Learn biking and later cycle down to the market for shopping or to your friend’s place.
  • Download a physical activity Application (App) on your Smartphone. This will help you keep a tab on your physical activity ratio and work out on areas where you need improvement.

  • SET CLEAR-CUT GOALS: Setting clear-cut goals over the short-term as well as long-term will keep you motivated and focused, increasing the depth of physical activity and making required healthy lifestyle changes. Goals also help to track your activity and compel you to find solutions for barriers or impediments to your activity.
