I’m in much of the same position (but in a different industry) and I’ve encountered the same blank-eyed “that’s cool” attitude when I describe my work.
I can see the allure of working on consumer-facing, hip startups that revolutionize the way we share pictures of cats on the web.
But I’m not interested in that kind of work. I spend roughly 40 hours per week in an office, using various software to do my job and so do a lot of other people across the world. So if I can make the experience of using those tools quicker, cleaner and more easily understandable, I can potentially improve the work enjoyment of a lot of people.
And to me, that makes working at a thoroughly non-glamorous company entirely wort it.
