Thinking about the future can be fun and exciting; however, it can also be extremely stressful (especially when it comes to finances).

Do I have enough money to pay my bills?

If my car breaks down, do I have enough money to buy a new one?

Will I be able to retire at a reasonable age?

For some people (who are wealthy beyond belief), these questions are irrelevant; however, for most people (including myself), these questions shine light on the harsh reality of life.

The bright side is that if you are smart with your money, then there is a good chance that you will set yourself up for retirement.

What qualifies as being smart with your money?

That is a tough question to answer because everybody does not have the same income, bills, dependents to take care of, and a number of other variables.

Nevertheless, the following are a couple of general guidelines in order to manage your finances in a foresighted manner:

  • Only spend money that you have
  • Find a healthy balance between having fun and being cheap
  • Contribute to your retirement account(s) as much as you can
