The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most spectacular feats of engineering. It first opened on May 27, 1937, and at the time, it was the longest spanning bridge in the world.

In fact, the total length of the bridge is 1.7 miles, its width is 90 feet, and it tallest tower looms 746 feet above the water. Trust me, I could go on and on regurgitating the astounding statistics surrounding The Golden Gate Bridge, but I will save you the redundancy. I sourced the aforementioned statistics from this website, so feel free to visit it if you want to learn more.

How is a bridge like this even built?

To build a bridge (no matter its magnitude), you can go about doing so by following these general steps:

  • Step #1: Evaluate the location and propose different designs for the bridge itself
  • Step #2: Lay a strong foundation using concrete pillars
  • Step #3: Install piers to support the bridge
  • Step #4: Add the “superstructure” (cables, latticework, etc.)
  • Step #5: Perform quality and safety inspections

Obviously, building a bridge is not as simple as the above steps make it out be. An innumerable amount of workers, engineers, and other personnel is required to accomplish this…
