We had one hell of a 2019

Our pre-F1 party PR1X was one of the peaks of mayhem at 1880. Since then, some other incredible highlights include hosting Joseph Schooling, exporting our salon night to the Google campus, indulging our fetishes at Halloween, releasing our inhibitions with funk duo Tuxedo — Grammy-award winning Mayer Hawthorne and Jake Uno, getting lost in deep underground sounds with international house legend Louie Vega, and being mesmerised by British Breakthrough Artist Tom Walker and X Factor winner James Arthur.

We had the opportunity to speak with Marc Weinstein (entrepreneur, venture capitalist, start-up advisor, and Fyre’s music festival consultant) at 1880.

Here are 2 questions from the evening:

We’ve all been in situations where we feel like something is going down and we know we can say something about it but we didn’t. Was there that point for you?

A lot of the reflection I’ve been doing has been distilled to internal versus external. Intuition is often ignored and rationalised away for external desires. We often encounter situations where we trust someone more than we trust ourselves…

As His Holiness entered the room he greeted the entourage, paying particular attention to the children in the front row. He suggested that if people like them, belonging to the 21st century, made an effort to change things through education, a more peaceful and compassionate world might emerge after one generation or so.

He pointed out that young children care little for differences among them and…

We may have stolen the acronym but we’re neither wrestlers nor wildlife enthusiasts. We could be Wicked Wild Females, or the Wonderful Women’s Forum.

Through 2018, we hosted a series of dinners for a few groups of women at 1880 who are each putting a dent in the universe in their own unique way. Every one who came shared their stories of most cherished moments, deepest wishes, hopes and aspirations, times of clarity and courage, times of doubt and fear, essentially — life.

The Future is Asian with Parag Khanna kicks off our salon discussions. From there we’ll be exploring the world in 2050 — what does AI do to us, where are the job opportunities, what nonsense is this global income tax? Will Bitcoin be just a bit coin or blossom into a global currency? Having landed on the Dark Side of the Moon, will there be…

December 1st 2018

A year ago in December, our Founding Members stepped into 1880 for the first time.

Since we opened our doors, we’ve debated the issues dearest to your hearts, re-imagined the world in technicolour, traded ideas, traded bitcoins. We did it with grace, elegance, and a sense of humour. We’ve shared meals and drinks, we’ve celebrated and commiserated. We are truly one, and we thank you for being on this insane journey with us.

We are looking ahead to the next year — the terrible twos and a possible sibling for 1880 in Southeast Asia.

In collaboration with Brunswick, we gathered this morning with Lord Charles Powell, John Wilton, Steve McBain, and Nancy Hungerford to discuss this intellectual stimulus: “Brexit is a vote about identity, a white anglo-saxon identity.” As the world debates nationalism and immigration, a living case study in the United Kingdom unravels right before our eyes.

The unequal distribution of wealth has provoked the disenfranchised to rise and ask of immigrants: “what are they going to take from us?” instead of “what will they contribute?” With investments flowing out of the country, will their emotional outburst soon give way to rationality and…
