In a word — Yes. Slave narrative movies are traumatizing. The topic of slavery is, for me, as traumatizing, personal and visceral as (I imagine) the topic of the Jewish Holocaust is for Jews. My great grandparents were born before 1865. My mother’s maiden name is Horton —as in The Horton Plantation in North Carolina. Slavery is not some intellectual exercise for me and my family. The past is not gone. It’s not even passed/past.
