The Question Respect Thread (Post-Crisis)
The Question is Vic Sage, vigilante protector of Hub City. He is a great martial artist and detective, an investigative reporter in his civilian identity. The mask he wears to disguise his face is made of an experimental material called pseudoderm. Sage is driven by a deeply personal quest for philosophical meaning, which has taken him through both objectivism and zen; in some versions, he is portrayed as a paranoid conspiracy theorist. Aristotle Rodor is his closest friend and mentor, although his teachers have included Richard Dragon and Lady Shiva. Myra Fermin is his most frequent love interest. During 52, when Sage was dying of lung cancer, he trained Renee Montoya as his successor and she eventually replaced him. Sage has been a member of the Justice League, the Sentinels of Justice, the Living Assault Weapons and the Black Lantern Corps.
The Question was created by Steve Ditko, and his first appearance published by Charlton Comics was in Blue Beetle #1 (1967). After Charlton was bought by DC Comics, Denny O’Neil seriously revamped the character to reintroduce him in Question #1 (1986). Originally, The Question was going to be a key character in the Alan Moore epic Watchmen, along with the other recent acquisitions from Charlton Comics, but DC told him he couldn’t use the characters because they had plans to move them into the main DC universe, forcing Moore to create an alternative — Rorschach.
Standard Equipment:
- Pseudoderm Mask: A mask made out of an experimental substance known as “pseudoderm” that gives the Question the appearance of a man without a face. The mask also serves as another layer of defense and a way to scare or intimidate people. The mask is very difficult to removewithout the proper binding agent. It is also lead-lined as countermeasures to x-ray vision, and can also be molded with actual faces for disguises and stealth.
- Binary Gas: The Question carries a specialized gas inside his belt to apply and remove his mask. The gas is also helpful for disguises since it can change the color of his suit and hair. Besides these, the gas can also be used as a smokescreen against his enemies, and has psychotropic properties to amplify his senses and increase his mystical powers. Besides the belt, the gas can also be summoned via the Question’s hands.
- Calling Cards: Question often leaves calling cards that also emit the same binary gas, which he has shown to use as weapons, specifically as a custom specialized type of smoke grenade.
Optional Equipment:
- Firearms: Although he doesn’t always carry firearms, the Question has shown skills and affinity if they are ever available. He has been shown to use semi-automatic pistols, submachine guns, and even rocket launchers with competent marksmanship.
Notable Attacks/Techniques:
- Dragon-Style Kung Fu: The Question is trained in martial arts by the famous Richard Dragon. Using what he had learned, the Question is capable of defeating multiple enemies at once(even armed and trained cops), fight superhumans, and be able to kick a car hard enough to move it. He can feel sensations in the air, making it difficult to sneak up on him. He’s also trained well in blocking and ignoring pain and surviving lethal cold temperatures.
- Zen Buddhism: His training with Dragon also granted him mystical abilities that is based around zen principles. He knows a mental technique that can help in healing wounds and broken bones, and a technique called “going inside” that aids in his memory and thinking. He can even communicate with the forests and rivers.
- Urban Shamanism: Later in his adventures, the Question would become self-taught in urban shamanism. With it, he can walk in the astral plane, see through walls, see the souls of dead people, and track down people by feeling the city he is in. With focus and the aid of his gas, the Question can also make himself a floating invisible astral form that can hurt and kill his enemies and influence people’s minds.
