I’m pretty sure I could come up with at least 💯 reasons why one should visit ARMENIA yet I would love to limit my list recommending you to feel the spirits of antique villages, ancient churches, modern constructions and of course poetic nature with soaring mountains located in and out of Sisian town.

Sisian, Syunik, Armenia

So we need to uncover what makes Sisian unique and worthy of your hand-earned money.

1. Shaki Waterfall

There is really no other aesthetic waterfall like Shaki. The waterfall is situated 3 kilometers north-west of Sisian town and the energy of the Shaki river is very strong as the river of sparkling splashes absorbs the voices of humans and the sounds of surrounding nature.

Shaki Waterfall, Syunik, Armenia

As stated in a legend, Shaki waterfall was named after a stunning girl named Shake, who jumped from a steep cliff to escape enemy conquerors’ violence. The long dress of Shake became a picturesque waterfall named after her.

Nowadays, the main part of the waterfall is used for the operation of the Shaki hydrological power station which absorbs a considerable amount of water. If you have a chance to taste water in any houses of Sisian town, you will feel the taste of the water.

2. Armenian Stonehenge

Ok, the fact be told about Armenian Stonehenge or Zoratz Karer is that it’s among the oldest observatories in the world. This stone observatory is a prehistoric archeological site located on a mountain plateau.

The history of Karahung (“Kar” means “Stone” and “Hunge” means “Speaking”. In a nutshell, it means “Speaking Stones”). The history of Karahunge dates back of 7500 years and according to archeological observations the oldest shoe was found in its territory. Altogether, 230 stones are counted on the area of this magical monument.

And there is a small museum dedicated to the findings in the Karahunge area. There you can have a look on Paleolithic petroglyphs and grave artifacts from Bronze Age burial site over 200 shaft graves.

3. Vorotnavank

If you were to ask visitors to Armenia what their favorite Armenian spot was, I would guess that for many it might be the spot of Vorotnavank, a fortified monastery, right of the road via a paved driveway about 8.5 km from the stop sign, on a promontory overlooking the Vorotan. There are cross carved gravestones in the cemetery. From the monastery, the road winds down to a bridge.

And now, a brief info about an amazingly shaped bridge with the Vorotan river and a background of volcanic rocks.

Meliq Tang bridge was constructed on the Vorotan river in the 19th century under the gorge of Vorotan village. Here you can admire the stones symphony and…

4. Ughtasar/Camel Mountain

Mountains might be the first thing that come to mind considering a visit to Armenia. There is a playground for those of you who love hiking, mounting and discovering.

I would love to tell you about mysterious Ughtasar mountain, an archaeological place. In ancient times people came here to make rituals and even sacrifices. Here you can find petroglyphs with figures of goats representing symbols of God.

Mount Ughtasar, Syunik, Armenia

Mount Ughtasar is located by a ice sheet lake nestled in the edge of an extinct volcano. As soon as you get there you can easily find carvings around the lake as well. By the way, if you feel tired to hike, you should reach there by Jeep in a good weather.

Make sure it’s not all about my lovely hometown, Sisian. It doesn’t matter that it’s chilly in Sisian as natives are warm-hearted and they are always ready to treat you with Armenian BBQ, hand made vodka or wine and of course Armenian dried fruits.

Oh, plus, don’t forget that you don’t need to spend much money to see all these splendid views and have fun making lifelong memories.
