Grateful for the Car Accident and Hospital Visit that Put Me on This Journey

Not being able to breath on your own and feeling like you have a gorilla sitting on your chest are incredible ways of bringing into focus that which matters the most. It is inspiration for working on a better you.

A few years ago, I was rear-ended and my car was totaled. Somehow, after I got hit, the car performed an acrobatic routine that landed me perfectly sideways on a ditch. Like a scene out of a movie, I was able to pull myself out through my car’s sunroof with the help of a good Samaritan and I realized just how quickly our lives can change.

Sometimes, we never realize that until it is too late. We take so much for granted. Surviving something like that gives you not just an appreciation for life but it reminds you that you are here for a reason. There is a purpose for you and you have to find it before your expiration date is up.

Following the accident, I made it a point to enjoy my family and friends more, to take deeper breaths, to spend time outdoors and to work on the things that matter to me to create a legacy that I’ll be proud of once the final curtain falls.

While making progress takes time, dedication and support, you wouldn’t think that a hospital visit would help me to further appreciate how our life is truly fragile. But it did just that.

The visit took place on a Father’s Day and stemmed from some viral infection that had made its way to the saclike membrane that holds my heart. The condition, known as pericarditis, made it painful to draw each breath and I felt like any one breath could be my last.

Thankfully, that was not the case! I walked out of there but the experience stayed with me. The multiday visit pushed me to get back to working out and to doing my best to stay healthy, fit and relaxed. I also try to encourage others to do the same. I don’t want them to experience what I experienced.

I have since launched a “Target Your Impossible and Make It Possible” apparel brand to remind others to target their “impossible” and make it possible. Whether you’re trying to lose weight, start a business, adopt a new habit, there is always a way forward if you push hard enough. If you don’t think you can do it alone, get a friend to support your cause and you’ll see how far you’ll go.

Don’t let anything stop you from achieving your potential and living your life with purpose because we don’t have the luxury of knowing when the clock will run out on us. Instead of living in a situation that makes you an spectator of your life, take charge and become the author of a life book that can help motivate others to challenge themselves, too.
