“Why do I need any other wallpaper on my phone other than my family’s photo?”
This is the first questions I get asked when I talk about our smartphone & tablet wallpapers. Short answer is that the vast majority of people don’t need any other photo … I suspect somewhat 95%+of smartphone users have a family/dog/amazing shot/default wallpaper on their screen.
Now, let’s take a step back and think about what our smartphone screen is and why we need to decorate it. It’s the screen that we look at for more than 2 hours (effectively) every day, seven days a week, a bit more on the weekends. We interact with it for work (email, collaboration), news, camera/photos, social media, gaming, communication, transportation, navigation, nearly everything we do. Our whole gadget world has collapsed at this device and this is what justifies its high price point.
This brings me to the 2 main points why wallpapers exist:
- People tend to personalize their expensive possessions, i.e. cars, shirts, laptops (mac logos on back), etc.
- People tend to decorate surfaces they spend lots of time looking at
As a computer scientist, I’m tempted to think of the duality problem of how we decorate our physical surroundings Vs. how we decorate our digital surfaces (I’m sure MIT’s Media Lab would have a view here). We tend to apply wallpapers to our walls, put posters, paintings, framed photo shoots to make our environment friendlier and more inspiring. At our offices, we put family pictures on our desks, desktop wallpapers of gateway destinations.
Now, think about the equivalent (dual problem) in the digital surface world. If you browse through our websites, you’ll see we’ve ended up having categories/themes that closely resemble interior design themes. The digital world, as it becomes more prevalent in our lives, it follows the same rules of decoration/interior-design as the physical one.
To sum it up, using a wallpaper on your phone or tablet is the primitive expression for personalisation, for making the cold walls/interfaces warmer, friendlier and mood uplifting.
