There is important news, let’s share it and record it together. Friends in the optical network are paying close attention to the progress of OSU technology . China Mobile Research Institute’s official WeChat account posted a message.

Recently, the third plenary meeting of Study Group 15 (SG15) of the International Telecommunication Union Standardization Sector (ITU-T) for the 2022–2024 study period concluded in Geneva, Switzerland.

Optical transport network (OTN) fine-grained fgOTN 3 core standards have been submitted for approval:

Including G.709.20 (fgOTN overall), G.709.Amd 3 (fgOTN interface) and G.872 Rev.6 (fgOTN architecture)

The international standardization of fgOTN (fine-grained OTN) technology in ITU-T has also gone through a tortuous process .

  • Initially, the OSU technology project originally proposed by China was established and received significant attention. However, during the standard discussion process, foreign experts strongly questioned . There were huge differences between domestic and foreign solutions. ITU -T management even proposed to terminate the standard project at one point.
  • Under this difficult situation, China Mobile actively promoted and carried out in-depth technical research and analysis with domestic experts on the one hand, and continued communication and exchanges with ITU-T international experts on the other, restarting the fgOTN standard project and clarifying key technical directions . And gradually reached consensus on core technical mechanisms such as fgOTN frame structure, mapping, and synchronization.
  • During this process, China Mobile innovatively proposed mechanisms such as fgODU to carry VC services and one-step lossless bandwidth adjustment, optimized and improved the fgOTN technology system, and ultimately formed the fgOTN international standard . fgOTN inherits the TDM mechanism of SDH and OTN, and adopts one-step bandwidth adjustment, which greatly optimizes the reliability of lossless bandwidth adjustment.

OSU technology has always had technical differences since its inception. The international standards have been basically set this time, and we need to continue to pay attention to the subsequent domestic technological development!
