Are Vacations Truly as They Seem?
What is a vacation? What is a vacation like? You probably think of words like relaxing, travelling, and time off, but are these words that similar? I think everything in life is different based on your perspective, and today I’ll reveal something shocking, but yet so obvious.

History is the mechanism for how we learn how things originated. Today that tool will be very useful. So where better to look at than the origin of vacations? Vacations originated, like most things, in Rome. Romans were the first known people to “travel for leisure.” They even had guides of how to get to certain locations, similar to current day brochures.
This carried over into our current day. Of course the word vacation varies a lot from the idea that was invented in Rome, and its meaning has also been confused. There are two different meanings to the word vacation. One is to travel for leisure and the other is a break from school or work. No one in their right mind would argue that a break from school or work is bad for you. It’s proven that everyone needs a break. People need time to rest. They can’t just dedicate their lives to school and work and have no time to enjoy themselves.
However this other idea of vacation is the one that becomes problematic. Travelling to fun locations in theory is simple and overall fun, but the planning and actual reality from it is far from the truth. Vacations are like parasites, aren’t they? But wait. Wait just a second there, Dylan. Half of you are probably yelling, “no!” at your computer screen right now. I didn’t even realize what I was saying until I got some results that shocked me…

I recently did a pole on Instagram to find out where people like to go on vacations. The results were mostly what you could expect, but I did pick up on a trend that was extraordinary to me. I enjoyed finding similarities in the places people wanted to go to. A lot of people said they wanted to go to places that I also had wanted to go to. However besides that, there definitely was an interesting trend.
The questioned I asked was, “If you had to go an a last minute vacation where would you go?” I wasn’t very specific in the “rules” of this survey, but most people had a very interested way of response. About half of the people who answered gave me an answer that could be expected. If I included my answer it would also fall into this category. However, the other half of people answered in a different, but consistent way. They gave two answers. One answer was almost identical to the answer to people from the first group gave. It’s what you would expect. The second answer was a place that had some importance in their life, and this truth in of itself is very important.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not going to jump into some deep philosophy that you guys don’t want to listen to. All I have to say is that I was wrong. Yes you heard that right. When I was planning out this post I wanted to reveal the unknown knowledge that a vacation is less about relaxing and more about stress, but sometimes things just don’t work out the way you think so at first. Vacations are less of an actual thing and more of a state of mind. Some people enjoy travelling and others don’t, but a vacation is truly when you are “at home”. It’s when you are somewhere or doing something that’s important to you.
Vacations are more like weighing costs and rewards. You put in time and you get out a good experience that you will remember. It’s all in the eye of the beholder. It’s something greater than words can explain, because it doesn’t take place in a world made of words.

Well this has been a fun article to do. I remember watching Adam Savage in the popular series Mythbusters say that he loved it when he was wrong. That’s truly how I feel right now. I guess in this situation not only you get to learn more, but I do to.
