What if Amazon doesn’t accept Bitcoin?
Last month, Re/code revealed that Amazon does not have plans to “engage bitcoin [sic].” The conclusion seemed to indicate that this was bad news for Bitcoin.
Like bitcoin? Like Amazon? Want to use bitcoin to buy stuff from Amazon?
I have some bad news for you. Not going to happen anytime soon.
Roger Ver called bullshit and predicted Amazon would accept by end of this year. This discussion should include eBay along with some game theory dynamics.
Integrating Bitcoin at Amazon is clearly more technically challenging than for Overstock.com in scale and complexity. Amazon has 3rd party sellers so they’ll have to build an escrow service. Of course, offering BTC payment options for items only sold by Amazon wouldn’t be an option given their obsession with customer experience.
The technical challenge of Amazon + BTC is more comparable to eBay + BTC. Given the latter’s deeper payments expertise and earlier interest in Bitcoin, I predict eBay will integrate crypto well before Amazon does.
This is where it gets interesting. Now imagine “eBay accepts Bitcoin” on today’s headlines.
It’s not only #1 on r/Bitcoin but on the cover of the Wall Street Journal. The solution will come with a wallet — they are PayPal — and this won’t bode well for existing Bitcoin companies.
So what happens to Amazon? They scramble.
To avoid this scenario, Amazon should partner and acquire existing Bitcoin companies aggressively to catch up. They need the full stack — wallets, “pseudo” exchanges (ala Coinbase/BitPay), escrow capabilities, and mining capacity.
Given Bezos and co’s long-term vision and strategic aptitude, I’m sure this has crossed their minds.
P.S. To customers, this discussion is moot. PurseIO users are already shopping on Amazon with Bitcoin and saving 15%.
