How to grow in Gods Word.
Read the Bible. Television Evangelists are not a good source of understanding the Bible. You need to invest in a King James or New International Version. In fact, if you ask your local church for a Bible I’m sure they can accommodate you. You need to read the Bible with your own eyes.
The Bible has two parts. The Old Testament which is found in the beginning, and the New Testament. The Catholic Bible may have a section in between the Old and New called the Apocrypha. For right now, lets just focus on the Old Testament and the New Testament.
It may be difficult to decide where to start. Read Genesis first. Genesis literally tells us how the earth became and where man came from. Reading chapter to chapter may be difficult. Here is a sample for reading once you have read Genesis; In the New Testament, the Book of Romans. Paul’s letters are the purest Gospels of justification and salvation for both Jew and Greek alike. Next, read the Gospel of John, the fourth book in the New Testament. Don’t rush through these books. Take-your-time. There is no reason to ramble through it. In fact, I suggest you keep a notebook nearby and write down anything you are unsure of or need more understanding. You can even do a quick search online for a commentary on the book, verse and/or chapter. A commentary is a breakdown of the wording and gives a behind-the-scenes identity so you can understand the reading material better.
The gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John all give similar accounts of Jesus Christ. In fact, there is a book called ‘A Harmony of the Four Gospels’ that compiles the four accounts into one book. An interesting and inspirational way of enjoying reading all four at one time.
There is no right or wrong way of reading. Just open the Bible and read. I like the commentaries that give a bit more details to the verses. In fact, I have several books in my library that give history or more explanation that I like to read and plan on writing a few book reviews.
Want to learn about Moses? Read Exodus. Want to read Josephs story? Start in the Old Testament, at Genesis chapter 37. Want to read Jobs story? Old Testament, 18th Book. You can do just about any kind of internet search now-a-days… want to find Jesus prophesy foretold? Or, Old Testament prophesies of Jesus birth? There are so many ways you can learn and read your Bible.
Just start.
