Cannabis: Safe for Children?

Across the globe, an estimated 2.4 million people are diagnosed with this chronic brain disorder each year — 4 new diagnoses a minute! The WHO estimates over 50 million people worldwide are afflicted. And while seizures can begin at any age, the majority of new cases are children. This chronic disorder, an abnormal firing of neurons in the brain causes one’s body to react in an unusual manner.

I called my reactions ‘the funky chicken.’ This disorder — my mortal foe, my enemy and my nemesis — has caused me embarrassment, injury and social stigma. My condition also excluded me from so many activities, as it was not known what could trigger my seizure activity.

My disorder is epilepsy, which comes from the Greek word epilambanein (to seize/attack). And that’s how epilepsy works. It takes control.

Cannabis has been used safely for millennia. Records of cannabis’ efficacy have been found in medical records dating back to the pre-Christian era. The Shennong’s Materia Medica Classic, a Chinese pharmacopoeia, contains references to dama “cannabis”.
