Origin of Poseidon

Poseidon was the second son of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. He was brothers with Zeus and hades. As the story goes he was swallowed by Cronus at birth but is later saved, along with his other brothers and sisters, by Zeus. Poseidon is one of the three most powerful gods among the 12 other Olympians.

Who is Poseidon

Poseidon was god of the sea, earthquakes, storms, and horses. Athena and Poseidon fought for control of Athens and Attica. A contest took place in Acropolis to see who would gain power. Poseidon struck a rock with his trident and produced a salt spring/horse. Athena brought forth an olive tree from the ground by the touch of her spear and she was proclaimed the victor. He is married to Amphitrite, the goddess of the sea, and is the daughter of Nereus and Doris (Oceanus).

Relationship with Odysseus

Poseidon is Odysseus’ main antagonist. He despises Odysseus for blinding his son, and makes his journey home a nightmare. Poseidon is also the seafaring Phaeacians, who help to return Odysseus to Ithaca. Odysseus and Poseidon do not have a good relationship, one of the strongest theories about how it began is that Poseidon is said to have sided with the Trojans during the Trojan War, and since Odysseus was the hero that turned that war in favor of the Greeks, this made Poseidon extremely unhappy. Since Poseidon is hostel and mean, his actions against Odysseus made sense. Even after his efforts to stop him from returning home, Poseidon wasn’t able to prevent Odysseus from returning home entirely.
