In my fall Booklab class, the project revolves around creating a poster for a cultural event. The objective is to use typography creatively and imaginatively to design a folding poster. This poster should have one side dedicated to the event announcement and another for additional information.

For this project, I collaborated with the Boulder Improv group to revamp their monthly Improvarama show poster. This group hosts a monthly show at the Louisville Underground in Louisville, Colorado, where three different teams perform in a roughly hour-and-a-half-long show. The client’s primary request was to provide the audience with information about improv and how to engage with the Boulder Improv community. This inspired me to create a foldable booklet that could be placed on seats at the show for attendees to read.

The information I decided to include in this project encompasses team names, each accompanied by a bio, a description of short-form improv, a list of games to be played, an explanation of long-form improv, and details about classes and workshops.

Inspiration

Drawing inspiration from 1960s posters and movie title designs, particularly the works of Saul Bass, known for his designs in movies like Ocean’s 1 various Alfred Hitchcock films, I aimed to create a vibrant poster. I also took cues from the changing fall leaves in Colorado, where I lived, blending 60s design elements with fall colors to create a poster that resonates with the show’s time frame.

Given that this is an improv show, I aimed to infuse the poster with a fun and light-hearted energy. Since the show coincided with the fall Thanksgiving season, I chose a color palette reflecting the autumnal vibes.

Typography and Color

One of the main challenges in this project was breaking down the basics of improv and providing the right amount of information to the audience while ensuring it remained easily understandable. It was also a test to fit all this information within the constraints of the poster space, as the client requested the inclusion of a substantial amount of information, which, in the end, I believe was successfully achieved.
