“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” — Proverbs 22:6 NIV

God tells us in Proverbs 22:6 how important it is to teach a child while they are young. Modern research and psychology tell us that the amount of information we learn and remember in our youth is the greatest in our lifetime. Faith often comes more easily to children, and a foundation can be built that will last a lifetime. As leaders, we have the responsibility to care for children. This course can help you learn why it’s important to reach children when they are young, and how to minister to them effectively.

On August 15, 2018, the Children’s Ministry 101 training course will be available! This four-hour course, developed by OneHope, incorporates research, biblical teaching, and practical ministry experience to help leaders explore God’s heart for children and the responsibility we have to care for them. This course helps inspire children’s ministry leaders’ work and calling for the Kingdom of God, as well as helping leaders become more effective in teaching the Word of God to children. Through this course, children’s ministry leaders will learn and apply ministry practices rooted in biblical principles and improve their children’s ministry skills and leadership.

Course topics include the following: children’s advocacy; knowing yourself as a teacher; characteristics of a child; the skills of a teacher; and teaching the Gospel to children.

Children’s advocacy is all about why we minister to children, including biblical and statistical facts that explain why we need to invest in the next generation and the generations to come. In the section on “knowing yourself as a teacher”, you will be taken on a journey through scripture to reassure the teacher regarding who they are in Jesus Christ. It will help teachers identify what qualities they possess that are strengths, and what qualities they may still want to develop.

The Characteristics of a Child details who children are at different stages of their lives. It will outline where children are developmentally in their physical growth as well as their spiritual growth at various ages and developmental stages.

Skills of a Teacher helps teachers think about their classroom setting as well as how to prepare a schedule and an engaging lesson using object lessons, dramas, and games. Issues like dealing with children with disruptive behaviors, being creative with classroom space, and alleviating boredom are all addressed.

And finally, Teaching the Gospel to Children offers clarity on how to help children respond to the Good News. This includes teaching children a “thick” Gospel, which means that our representation of the Gospel needs to grow and mature as children themselves grow and mature, and that the Gospel foundation of children’s faith needs to be thick and strong.
