Working with children and youth requires that the groundwork to their faith-walk be laid through teaching God’s word. We know that God’s word is powerful, living and active! (Hebrews 4:12) As you do the difficult work of reaching the next generation, we encourage you to use scripture daily. We have compiled a list of the top five most powerful verses for working with children and youth. These verses can be read daily, and prayed over your children or the children in your ministry. The promises in them can be claimed!

Matthew 18:1–5 says,

“At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, ‘Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.’”

Jesus is clear — those who approach the throne with the faith and humility of children will enter the kingdom of heaven. Jesus specifically made time for children throughout his time on earth, and he urged his disciples to see their faith as something to aspire to.

The Bible also gives direction on how to grow in that faith in God.

“Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.” — Ephesians 3:17–18

In addition to approaching our walk in Christ with faith of a child, humility, knowing our direction and purpose has power. 1 Thessalonians gives us a clear example of a verse that defines our purpose in Christ.

“For we speak as messengers approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News. Our purpose is to please God, not people. He alone examines the motives of our hearts.” — 1 Thessalonians 2:4

1 Thessalonians continues to challenge us to live out our purpose in Christ. If our children know their purpose and place in this world, they can live in the power of God.

“We pleaded with you, encouraged you, and urged you to live your lives in a way that God would consider worthy. For he called you to share in his Kingdom and glory.” — 1 Thessalonians 2:12

And finally — when we are walking with Christ, we are called to share the Gospel with those lives around us with which we have influence. Ultimately, the power of Jesus in our lives is ours to share with the world.

“But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?” — Romans 10:14

We hope that you find these verses as powerful in your ministry to children and youth as we have! May we use them to pray over our children; to claim for our ministry; and to commit to memory as a constant reminder of God’s power and purpose in our lives.
