Equipping Dads to Lead
Parenting is a tough job, and raising children who love Jesus is an especially hard challenge. Guiding children in their spiritual walk so that they can have a vibrant, living faith in adulthood requires preparation and practical tools. Here at the 4/14 Window Movement, we believe that parents and leaders need support and training to reach children in the crucial spiritual window from ages four to 14.
According to a 2007 Barna study on challenges that Christian parents face in guiding their children’s faith, spiritual authenticity from parents is a must. “In addition to making parenting a 24/7 priority, we found that parents must have an authentic and vibrant faith in order to provide meaningful spiritual guidance to their children,” said George Barna, the director of the study. “Children rarely embrace spiritual principles and practices that their parents fail to demonstrate in their lifestyle.”
One could argue that spiritual guidance missing most in the world’s example of fatherhood. Roland C. Warren is the former President of the National Fatherhood Initiative, and he believes that fathers were designed by God to be earthly mirrors of our heavenly father. According to Warren, “over the years, God has shown me that the attack on the institution of fatherhood and the strategy to make fathers unloving and ineffective is a primary goal of Satan himself. Why? Because if fathers are distant, distracted, disconnected, or even abusive, children will believe all fathers are this way, even a heavenly Father who claims to love them unconditionally.”
In Matthew 7:9–11, Jesus asked, “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask Him!”
