The World’s Operating System

Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen in Albuquerque, New Mexico in March 1975. In 1979, the company moved to Bellevue, Washington and then to Redmond (home of current global headquarters) in 1986, the same year it went public. With a market cap of $448.5B, Microsoft is currently the third largest publicly traded company.

Microsoft is well known for their Windows Operating System which was originally released in 1985. The current version is Windows 10 which was released last year. In 1989, Microsoft introduced the Office suite of productivity applications. Today, more than 1.2 billion people use Microsoft Office in 140 countries and 107 languages around the world. Other Microsoft products include Azure (cloud platform) Surface, Lumia, Xbox and Skype.

A New Era

In early 2014 Satya Nadella became the CEO of Microsoft. An employee of 20+ years, Nadella said he originally joined Microsoft because he saw how clearly Microsoft empowers people to do magical things and ultimately make the world a better place. He currently has a 94% approval rating on Glassdoor.

Earlier this year, Microsoft decided to produce a Linux version of its SQL Server database program. The Wall Street Journal cites this move as “the most dramatic example yet of CEO Satya Nadella’s vision of Microsoft as a multiplatform company that looks beyond the Windows ecosystem.” The company plans to to reach an annualized commercial cloud revenue of $20 billion in the 2018 fiscal year (via Microsoft).

“Many companies aspire to change the world. But very few have all the elements required: talent, resources and perseverance. Microsoft has proven that it has all three in abundance.” — Satya Nadella
