Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings
I Saw Father John Misty & Reached Peak Bushwick Hipster-dom

Yesterday, I saw Father John Misty at Cain’s ballroom in Tulsa. He’s incredible. I had class all day, and was worried about having to miss architecture studio, but they told us to go to a Donald MacDonald lecture that let out at 3:45pm instead of class — which wouldn’t have let out until 5:20pm. It takes 2hrs to get there, and doors opened at 7 so that would’ve been a little pressed. The lecture was really cool, though. He designed the SF Bay Bridge, and showed a lot of designs for urban/affordable housing that seem really intriguing. (it was especially interesting because I get to use my notes from this lecture to write a paper for my Global Environmental Issues course 🤸🏻)

Harleigh met me at my apartment and we headed to the venue. I drove. I hate driving. I used half a tank of gas. (it’s my own fault for speeding mais c’est la vie) Tennis opened, and I was under the impression that I had never heard a Tennis song before. I was wrong, I knew every one they played. We play them at work. The lead singer’s outfit was so cool. And the music was super funky — funk in a good way — music-you-want-to-dance-to music. Father John Misty came on around nine and as the band filed in it was essentially White Guys With Beards: The Live Experience. I thought this was really funny, because normcore is alive and well in the FJM fanbase. I’ve never seen so many dad hat+mustache+501s+circle reading glasses outfits in a single space.

He opened with Pure Comedy, and played through some of the album, then left the stage. The crowd roared, and they came back out to play for another hour. Highlights of which being: Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings, I Love You Honeybear, and Real Love Baby. He had a throat infection, and went on a spiel about steroids and how “he’ll still be the same person even when his body is more muscle-bound” and how he’s dying — he mentioned this multiple times throughout the show. One time while making fun of Chris Martin, à la Coldplay, and the “camp-counselor-frontman.” It was incredible. I sang every word, and could not stop smiling. I love Father John Misty.

& as we were leaving the girl who was next to me the whole time complimented my earrings, score! On the whole, a really solid day.
P.S. He didn’t play this but it’s A+
