Big Brother

Not sure what to make of this show. I want to say it’s the epitome of terrible television, but I also think because it displays a side of human nature not commonly seen there’s potential that it might hold some redeeming sociological value.

For the record, I’ve never watched Big Brother until this season. It’s already in Season 18, so it’s obviously popular enough to have built a strong following to develop this kind of redundancy. However, this year due to extra free time I’ve found on my hands, I couldn’t resist but to try and see what all the hype is about.

To that I can’t say I haven’t regretted it. At this point I’m locked into wanting to know how it turns out, and who will eventually win. But with each episode, I feel more and more disgusted by the tactics used by the players. It’s as if this game is the poster child for everything wrong in today’s society.

For instance, players gossip about each other to set targets on who will be evicted. Lies are a given to deceive others for the purpose of gaining position. Pair bonding called “showmances” emerge, which are usually nothing more than two people relying on each other to make it to the end in an alliance typically built on nothing more than physical attraction.

In the end, it’s my fault for watching. Like I said, I want to tell myself there’s got to be some sort of redeeming value to this kind of “entertainment”. But so far the only thing I’m able to conclude is that as a species humanity is at a complete loss.
