“A Change of Heart About Animals” Letter to the Editor

In Jeremy Rifkin’s op-ed “A Change of Heart About Animals,” Rifkin argues that the similarities between animals and humans are too evident for us to be treating them inhumanely. I agree. Why are other living creatures treated so terribly? I mean, I am not vegan, but I am also not heartless. Stories like the one about the pigs needing social contact is sad. When you consider the reality that millions of pigs are slaughtered wholesale every year, the situation becomes tragic. The demand for animal products is astronomical, but the treatment of them shows we know how to look the other way and pretend that everything is okay.

People see animals like crows every day and assume they are just another dumb bird rather than the critical thinkers they are. Betty is a testament to that. Just interacting with animals like Betty shows there is something ‘in there.’ We shouldn’t stop eating animals and using animal products, but a little empathy goes a long way. Humans should try it some time.
