From time to time, to climb trees, arborists will need to use climbing spikes. However, this is not something they should be doing in their everyday practice. Things like pruning trees do not require the use of climbing spikes. What these spikes are is a very sharp steel spike that is attached to the legs of a climber. It is secured in place by calfskin ties and cushioned backings. The only time it is permitted to use these is if a tree is being removed. If used on a tree that is healthy, it will harm it and cause damage.

Tree tissue is damaged when the spikes cut through it. How severe the damage is depends on the tree and how often the spikes are used on it. Normally, these cuts will heal but if there is continuous use of tree spikes on the same tree, it will make the tree weak and do permanent damage. Occasionally, an arborist might use these to prune a tree. We are not going to go over what to look for in a reputable tree care company and in what situations tree spikes should be used.
