Almost 30% of voters showed no preference between the finalists in the Secretary of State race. What does that mean for the results?
The Independent Party of Oregon’s Secretary of State race was a serious stress test for STAR Voting. With three Democrats, an Independent, a non-affiliated candidate, and only one Republican, this is the type of scenario where most voting methods don’t cut it. Not only that, but it was anybody’s race. All 6 candidates were viable, and for voters, there was no easy way to predict in advance who the front-runners were.
With standard Choose-One voting, elections like…
Joe Biden and Donald Trump, the two highest scoring candidates, advanced to the automatic runoff. Biden was preferred by 55.1% of voters; 39.4% preferred Trump. 5.5% had no preference between Biden and Trump.
With another voting method, the Independent Party of Oregon Presidential Preference Poll could have been a perfect storm for vote splitting.
The incentive and ability to vote honestly: STAR Voting is the first step to ending two party domination.
