Why did I move from Hospitality industry to Design industry?
My transformation & work dissatisfaction which drives me into a different industry.
It was early 2017, and I was about to complete my Hon’s and join a top 5-star hotel which I dreamed throw out my hon’s 4.5 years university life, Before completing my hon’s I started to learn practical hospitality by joining a movie theater (Star Cineplex, Bosundhara City) as a part-time employee as I was available only after my university classes. I was there for about 8 months and learn many good things and I had some expectation gap as well, like what hospitality I dreamed of what it looks like from outside and what it actually to serve.
I’m not saying the hospitality industry is not smart or satisfying for anyone But I would say it’s not for everyone and though I like the hospitality industry still I didn’t feel good as an employee there. Anyways I thought It might be a small industry and I should go for the big one and learn how it works. So after my Hon’s completing I’ve joined “Radisson Blu Water Garder, Dhaka, Bangladesh” I was there as an intern and then as a casual employee.
It’s not like I wasn’t performing well there I was liked by most of them and also doing some cool stuff and some challenging works. But still, I was feeling like I’m not who will work like this or something like this in a long term period. I was there as a casual Food and Beverage Service executive. So, I did serve in rooms, lobbies, and restaurants.

On my last day of internship in Radisson Blu, I've got a wow card for the best performance in 3 months period that was really surprising for me as I was about to leave the hotel and already changed my dress then I was called to attend staff service room to join the party. After that also I worked there as a casual for 5 months.
In the meantime when I was there I registered for a government course for freelancing. There was about 3 type of courses for freelancing. Web developing, Graphic Design & Digital Marketing was the 3 options for that. As I was non IT backgrounded and didn’t know about marketing that much I choose the design. Those I don’t know how to design but I felt that I have a good choice of design. I did some review types and short blogging type works in my early university life but I was curious about design that time.
So I go for the design and after online, Viva and documentation checking I got the chance for the free course from the government “Learning & Earning By ICT Ministry of Bangladesh”
I wasn’t good at graphic design class. As I didn’t design before and In that time what I can actually do is using Photoshop and illustrator a little bit and knows what good design looks like. Though I was one of the top performers in our class and got featured in Gazipur Division’s zone in this government program.
After that, we were supported by our course mentor to do regular works and our course-mates. In the first few months, it was really hard for me to do design something based on the requirement. Though I managed to fulfill some of those requirements and slowly learning about design. Some of our fellow designers were already started performing but I was more focused on planning and in what design path I really want to walk. Logo and Branding was my initial starting as a graphic designer but I was doing some printing based design works also.
In my starting, I was working on Fiverr, Upwork and freelancer.com, slowly I understood it really difficult to work 3 different market places in 3 different way. Also, I was wanted to how other market places work. So I also explored 99designs, Designcrowed, Designhill & Graphicriver, etc. Wasn’t good at how to make design looks good also my family members around me kept saying I haven’t any long term education degree on this I might not be a good fit in this sector but I was like-
“I do not believe in taking the right decision, I take a decision and make it right.” ― Muhammad Ali Jinnah
It’s not like my determination make me going on, it’s my passion in design sector & good taste of design.
I kept going and I understood this all are not for me and I can’t work for them all. So I started focusing on upwork and after a couple of months, I’ve got a “Top Rated Badge” that was really inspiring for me.
In the meantime, I started exploring the Bangladeshi design community and found some idol designers to follow. Though they are more creative and hardworking but still I dream I will be there someday in that type of design quality. So I wanted to connect with more freelancers and designer but My background is not from this But I wasn’t got such kind opportunities at that time.
Suddenly It was time for upwork Huddle where local freelancer meets and share there work experiences. So that was my first professional meetup and a design/ as a freelancer. I’ve met some great freelancers and some inspiring peoples out there.

After that also I’ve got the invitations for the event but wasn’t able to attend all of them. Though attended some of them.
Ohh... I forgot to say that there was a prize bond top 2 performer from each batch in that government design course. But the course management admin and project owners didn’t announce anything earlier. But after 6 months I’ve got a call that I was shortlisted for that and then again after 3 months that happened the announcement that I was one of the best 2 performers in that batch and got a Laptop, Internet modem & Keyboard Software disc as the price bond.

It was a long and interesting prize giving day, as all of the freelancers from this course around 60 areas from Bangladesh coming together to receive their gift & Yes I was lucky enough to be one of them.
At that time, I would say that was the realizing time to understand the surviving on freelancing. I was improving day by day from new projects and new experiences. But I was missing a tech gang and in business how the total product stand up? How do people think around me to make their business goals within a deadline? Just design logos and branding material weren’t good enough for me to understand how to build a team and how a team works.
So I was looking for a great team in the local area, which has international experience, great team members and of course they have to design for business and products. But the case is I was just a graphics designer I didn’t have a portfolio and such kind of experience to join as UI/UX designer in any good team in that time. I had seen a job post on Facebook From Audacity IT Solutions ( A well-reputed IT firm In Dhaka, Bangladesh). They were hiring one intern also I have got a chance as an intern in February this year.

Before starting on this job sections I would like to say about my last upwork huddle which I’ve enjoyed most and I did get chances to meet really some inspiring people from this field. I’ve seen some people who don’t have any ordinary skills but they can talk, They can talk good publicaly and they are making money from that. On that day I really had some different feelings about freelancing, I learned more about freelancing.
So now it's about my job life my upcoming goal in my job life. Initially, I was there for learning about UI/ UX design and how a product stands up from scratch. So the journey begins with some directions from our CEO and senior designers. They guided what to learn and how I can practice. I’ve designed my first app screen design for them in the interview. Though I did some web UI design before in this job. There were some daily design challenges parts and some conceptual redesign apps segments in the process of learning.
The enjoying part is this team take care of each other the seniors also make paths for juniors and there are some company cultural activities that made me so in touch to be with this team. Like celebrating each member's birthday on time together, a Dinner party on occasions ( where previous team members can also join with our current members, Also we share our success & struggle every in our work every-day.

The unique part is other team management like this hires already intermediate or expert levels of skilled people. But on the other hand Audacity IT hires newbies and intermediate levels of skilled peoples. They look for potential peoples who dreamed about their works, have the courage to do that and the ability to manage the position. Though it’s not worked every time but it's a way to introduce new talents in this industry.
It's been 9 months now, I become a permanent team member now. Did few mobile app designs projects, In house research projects, Presentations about future projects, 1 large scale research, and wire-frames for an upcoming international market place & UI UX part. Coming up with some large scale projects also.
Starting a day job for personal development in a regular process was another reason for joining Audacity IT Solutions. Everyone here are suggested by management & other team members to adapt book reading habit. I’m also working on my personal development. My daily work organizations, study about the user experience, keep up-to-date knowledge design tools. Though I’m not focusing on everything. I did minimize the subjects to focus on and trying to keep focus only basics which will help me to grow my other skills.
Applying the 80/20 rule to design career. Now that I’m focusing only on skill to create better designs & understand more about user experience. I think this will help me to grow in all area like more experience about different categories of Web UI, Apps and human interactions. More terms in apps development and web development. More ideas about how our ideas work in real life. I was told focus on more things but in this year I’m would love focus only design. I’m interested in front-end design also. that might be later this or next year.
As this writing is my first ever try to write an article in any field. So I know there are some areas to improve in my writing. But next, I will try to take some advice from experienced people. I will love to share how to perform better as a team member, my works and projects case study. The interesting part about personal improvement. Wish me luck.
Thanks for coming to this end.
